The third draft of 'Paul Morel' was sent to the publishing house Heinemann ; the response, a rather violent reaction, came from William Heinemann himself. His reaction captures the shock and newness of Lawrence's novel, 'the degradation of the mother [as explored in this novel], supposed to be of gentler birth, is almost inconceivable'; he encouraged Lawrence to redraft the novel one more time. In addition to altering the title to a more thematic 'Sons and Lovers', Heinemann's response had reinvigorated Lawrence into vehemently defending his novel and its themes as a coherent work of art. To justify its form, Lawrence explains, in letters to Garnett, that it is a 'great tragedy' and a 'great book', one that mirrors the 'tragedy of thousands of young men in England'.

As you might have noticed, the classical Roman Latin alphabet only has what we called "upper case", or majuscule, letters. So where did "lower case", or minuscule, letters come from? By the 4th century CE, a semi-cursive style called uncial was being used for handwriting. Uncial is considered a majuscule style but with rounded letters. Eventually this evolved into the minuscule style by the 8th century CE. Originally the two styles were used separately, majuscules for monumental inscription, and minuscules for manuscripts. However, during the reign of Charles the Great (early 9th century CE) the Carolingian Reform forced the merging of the two styles and the creation of the "dual alphabet". With this, our modern Roman alphabet was born.

In late 1917, after constant harassment by the armed forces authorities, Lawrence was forced to leave Cornwall at three days' notice under the terms of the Defence of the Realm Act . This persecution was later described in an autobiographical chapter of his Australian novel Kangaroo , published in 1923. He spent some months in early 1918 in the small, rural village of Hermitage near Newbury, Berkshire . He then lived for just under a year (mid-1918 to early 1919) at Mountain Cottage, Middleton-by-Wirksworth , Derbyshire, where he wrote one of his most poetic short stories, Wintry Peacock . Until 1919 he was compelled by poverty to shift from address to address and barely survived a severe attack of influenza .

In 1939, after H. W. Atkinson retired, T. B. F. Gargett who had worked for the firm since 1914 became a partner and the practice changed its name to A. H. Conrad & T. B. F. Gargett. One of Gargett’s earliest designs is the Somerville House Library and Art Studio – the latter built in a later stage. The design consisted of a rectangular library room and an octagonal reference library/reading room with balcony over. The interior had Jacobian style features such as the twisted timber balustrades and the design of the chairs.
